The OPEN Library

Open Library is a project of the non-profit Internet Archive, and is funded in part by a grant from the California State Library. This is an Open project – the software is open, the data is open, the documentation is open, and the site is open featuring 22,440,466 books (including 1,064,822 with full-text) database.openlib

OpenLibrary project has many participants that do not work for and are not directed by the Internet Archive. That said the Internet Archive has been working to provide resources, such as databases, to the OpenLibrary project. Everyone can participate in this project, whether  a programmer who wants to build on top of this data, a librarian who wants to add records of digitized books to her local catalog, or a lover of books who wants to make sure his favorites are well represented.

The software powering Open Library is centered around a flexible templating system that enables anyone to have control over the organization of their information display. It is designed to be simple to use, to encourage participation, yet powerfully modular through the application of macros and principles of networked interface.

Open Library provides an exciting opportunity for the librarianship community. Like the MARC format, its schema to contain all the important bibliographic information that librarians want to collect about books. This new schema futurelib hold a series of meetings for geeks, librarians, and booklovers to come together and hash out a proposal.
